While driving to my daughter’s in Providence, RI one day, I was listening to Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air.  She was interviewing Jonathan Safran Foer about his book, Here I am.She asked him what the title, taken from the Bible (Genesis 22:1), meant to him. In the course of the discussion, the meaning was equated to: “Live your life.” (attributed to Maurice Sendak.), which to Jonathan meant to seize the day.  Live life to the fullest.  Be present to it.  Terry’s interpretation was, “Inhabit your life.”  Inhabit your life;  What did she mean?  I’ve been pondering that….

For me, inhabit your life means to be fully in your world.  Take up residence wherever you are: at home, on a plane flying to Chicago, at your workplace, in your car driving across country, in your backyard weeding the garden, walking along the seashore, buying groceries, anywhere you find yourself.  Be yourself, the best you, living with intention and purpose, as you take residence wherever you are, whatever you are doing, both the fun, the mundaine, and everything in between.

So, what does taking up residence mean?  By this I mean, wherever you are, settle into your life.  Be totally in it just like you would settle into an overstuffed chair or couch, nestling into the cushions to read a book while sipping a cup of tea or coffee.  Become a part of the environment in which you find yourself.  Be fully present in what you are doing, what you are saying, who you are with, what’s going on around you.  Participate.  Feel your feelings.  Be mindful.  Help others.  Enjoy your family.  Take advantage of opportunities that come your way.  Learn from all situations.  Speak your truth respectfully.  Listen intently.  Be the best you that you can be as you live your life.

Wake up each morning and jump into your life full of purpose, presence, and gratitude, ready for a new day.  If for some reason you can’t jump in, then step into you’re your life slowly, lightly.  But step into it as fully and as deeply as you can in that moment, for a moment is just that, a moment, a blink of an eye. It’s gone in a flash.

Inhabit Your Life, experience it, be in it fully one, precious moment at a time!
